CHICAGO — Despite turning in one of the grittiest efforts of their careers, Danny Burch & Oney Lorcan came just shy of capturing the NXT Tag Team Championship at NXT TakeOver: Chicago II, as Undisputed ERA’s Roderick Strong & Kyle O’Reilly maintained court and defeated the hard-hitting duo in a blistering opening contest.

With tensions between the two duos boiling over during the past several weeks, the physicality was off the charts from the get go. Burch & Lorcan kept Strong & O’Reilly at bay in the early goings, using a mix of ground-and-pound, aggressive strikes and straight-up aggression to take control of the bout. However, when Strong hit Burch flush in the face with a dropkick and then smashed him across one of the LED boards below the ring apron, Undisputed ERA took control.

Strong and O’Reilly kept Burch down with hard-hitting offense and a swarming of submission holds. It wasn’t until the battered Burch connected with a brutal headbutt that he was able to tag in Lorcan, who absolutely exploded, downing his opposition instantly with a barrage of offense. Oney and the refurbished Burch kept Undisputed ERA reeling until O’Reilly was applied a cross armbreaker that evened the playing field.

NXT North American Champion Adam Cole made a pivotal save for his cohorts when he pulled O’Reilly out of the ring after it appeared he would be down for a definite three-count following an unbelievable flying European uppercut. Cole was caught by the referee and promptly ejected from ringside as Lorcan & Burch continued to rally.

In the pivotal moment, O’Reilly & Strong temporarily eliminated Burch, leaving the legal Lorcan alone with both NXT Tag Team Champions. After a succession of strikes, a more-than-dazed Lorcan was struck with a high-low combination from Undisputed ERA that kept him down for three.

The champions walked away victorious, but as the battered challengers rose to their feet in the ring, the NXT Universe paid respect with a stirring standing ovation. They may not have earned the titles, but Oney & Lorcan definitely earned respect.

After gloating about Undisputed ERA’s successful night, NXT Tag Team Champion Kyle O’Reilly issues a challenge to The BruiserWeight.

Undisputed ERA have vowed to “end the charade” of Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch’s NXT Tag Team Title ambitions at TakeOver: Chicago. Whether champions Roderick Strong & Kyle O’Reilly can make good on such a bold statement, however, won’t be known until the teams collide live on WWE Network on Saturday, June 16.

The double-tough tandem of Lorcan & Burch is riding a wave of momentum after joining forces with WWE U.K. Champion Pete Dunne to defeat Strong, O’Reilly and NXT North American Champion Adam Cole in a wild Six-Man Tag Team Match on May 16. Not only were Lorcan & Burch on the winning side in that encounter, but Burch scored the deciding fall by pinning O’Reilly, a feat that Lorcan & Burch believe sealed their status as Undisputed ERA’s next challengers.

Since forming their Brit-Am alliance last year based on the mutual respect that came out of their series of hard-hitting singles matches, Lorcan & Burch have emerged as one of the black-and-yellow brand’s grittiest duos. Yet, Undisputed ERA remain as brazen and confident as ever, claiming their loss in the Six-Man Tag Team Match was a fluke and insisting they’re out of Lorcan & Burch’s league.

Will Lorcan & Burch earn their first taste of championship glory in The Windy City, or can Undisputed ERA turn back their rough-and-tumble challengers and preserve their title reign? Find out when NXT TakeOver: Chicago streams live on the award-winning WWE Network on Saturday, June 16, at 8 ET/5 PT.

The Undisputed Era are in the back and Adam Cole says that last week was a fluke. The funniest part of last week was that they will hang their hats on that victory their entire careers. Roderick says they should not be facing them at Takeover. Kyle says it is Pete Dunne’s fault for giving them false hope. They didn’t even know who they were. Bobby says the charade comes to an end in Chicago. Roderick says he has no patience and he waits for no man. He wants Mr. Number Two Daniel Burch. He will show Burch that last week was a fluke and they are way out of their league.

Winners: Danny Burch, Oney Lorcan, and Pete Dunne

Bonded by their mutual disdain for Undisputed ERA, WWE U.K. Champion Pete Dunne will join forces with Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch to face NXT North American Champion Adam Cole and NXT Tag Team Champions Roderick Strong & Kyle O’Reilly in a Six-Man Tag Team Match this Wednesday on WWE Network.

The BruiserWeight’s alliance with Lorcan & Burch is one of practicality. Lorcan & Burch saved the U.K. Champion from Undisputed ERA’s three-on-one attack on May 2, but that was more due to Lorcan & Burch’s own problems with ERA than any sort of loyalty to Dunne, a notorious loner. (In fact, in making the case for forming a team, Lorcan matter-of-factly described Dunne as “a piece of garbage,” and Dunne didn’t object.)

In contrast, Undisputed ERA are indisputably aligned. Will Cole, Strong & O’Reilly’s cohesiveness give them an edge against the smash-mouth trio? Or can Dunne, Lorcan & Burch use their extreme animosity toward Undisputed ERA to unite and propel themselves to victory? Find out when NXT streams on the award-winning WWE Network this Wednesday at 8/7 C!

WWE Summary: It didn’t take long for the ill will between WWE United Kingdom Champion Pete Dunne and NXT Tag Team Champion Roderick Strong to come to the surface in their bitter grudge match. With the events of TakeOver: New Orleans still fresh in their minds, The BruiserWeight and The Messiah of the Backbreaker unleashed a galaxy of big strikes and nasty slams on one another.

The turning point in the hard-hitting showdown came when Strong prepared to hit one of his trademark chops (the same move that turned Daniel Bryan’s chest beet-red in the 50-Man Greatest Royal Rumble Match). Though Strong had wisely avoided giving up his hand to the digit-mangling Englishman throughout the match, his luck ran out here. Dunne prevented the chop, caught Strong’s hand and bent his fingers in all the wrong directions. The WWE U.K. Champion then barraged Strong with a German suplex and the Bitter End, but before the referee could count to three, Undisputed ERA’s Adam Cole & Kyle O’Reilly ran in and broke up the pin.

As Strong, Cole & O’Reilly continued beating down the outnumbered Dunne, a cavalry arrived in the form of Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch. After their run-in with Undisputed ERA last week, the gritty Brit-Am alliance was all too happy to even the odds and help send the nefarious faction scrambling from the ring. Dunne was denied the satisfaction of pinning his betrayer, but he can at least find solace in the fact he is no longer fighting this battle alone.

The likely main event of this episode will continue to address a big unresolved plot thread from TakeOver: New Orleans – Roderick Strong’s betrayal of Pete Dunne. It’s at least been explained, and pretty logically… Roddy figured The Bruiserweight would eventually turn on him because he only cares about his United Kingdom Championship. Joining Undisputed ERA not only allows him to wear one of the Tag Team Titles with Kyle O’Reilly, it also put him with a faction who watches one another’s backs. Considering that truth about UE (something we saw again just last week when they helped Adam Cole remain North American Champion when they interfered in his defense against Oney Lorcan, and then blasted Danny Burch, too), you have to wonder if Moustache Mountain won’t risk a Dunne betrayal of their own here – or if we have to wait until June’s Albert Hall shows for that six-man.

The next entrant at #34 is NXT Tag Team Champion Roderick Strong of The Undisputed Era. Strong goes at it with Elias and dropkicks him. Strong with backbreakers to Roode and then Anderson, Rey and Big E. Strong sends Rhyno to the apron and eliminates him. Strong works over Rey now. The next man out is Randy Orton to a big pop.

Orton heads to the ramp and floors Mojo, then Crew. Orton powerslams Anderson. Crews elbows Orton and goes to the top but Orton nails the RKO in mid-air. Orton tosses Anderson, then Mojo and then Crews. Heath Slater is out next as Orton works on dumping Bryan. Rey turns it around on Orton. Slater floors Big E with a knee. Slater works on dumping Elias now. Orton tries to eliminate Rey now. Roode works on Bryan. The next man out at #37 is NXT Superstar Babatunde Aiyegbusi. The big man unloads and floors Roode. Babatunde takes shots from Bryan but they do nothing. Babatunde puts the boots to Bryan in the corner now. Baron Corbin is out next. Corbin drags Elias under the bottom rope and sends him into the steel ring steps. Corbin rocks Orton and enters the ring, dropping Strong and Roode. Rey kicks Corbin and ducks clotheslines but Corbin nails a big Deep Six. Corbin splashes Roode in the corner but runs into kicks from Strong. Corbin runs around the ring and back in to knock Strong out of mid-air. Corbin eliminates Roode and Strong.
